A few times he (we don't know if it is a boy or girl) kicked his little legs and waved his arms around. It was so exciting to think about the day we will hold this child in our arms. In the mean time, however, today was a special treat. God is so good and His handiwork is profoundly evident in the lives of the unborn. I was reading John 3 this morning where Jesus tells Nicodemus that a man must be born of water and the Spirit to see the kingdom of God. We are praying not only for a healthy physical birth in May, but for the baby's Spiritual birth as well.

Golfin' with the boys...

This past Saturday Dad, my cousin Todd and I were able to play golf at Spring Creek Golf Course. For this year's hike we went to French Creek State Park. Despite its name, the creek is not French. Very odd! Nevertheless, we had a fantastic time of exercise and fellowship. All said and done we covered roughly 3 or 4 miles of trails. Throughout the day we passed two man-made lakes, traveled through some heavily forested areas and saw a lot of elevation change. Joost and Grace were very good hikers, and proved to have more energy than most of us. The two lovely pregnant women were equally impressive with their toughness and endurance! Yes, that pretty much leaves me, who was both winded and exhausted by the end! Fortunately we found a pizza place outside the park, and a healthy lunch of soda and pizza pies refueled my energy. The cool fall weather and great company made for an all around wonderful day.

Breakin' the law, breakin' the law...

Picture this...

A few days ago I received my birthday present from Rachel, a new camera! It was a great experience as I was able to get my hands dirty learning a little more about golf course design and construction. The weather in Nebraska was warm, but not overly hot while I was there. This part of Nebraska is located in an area known as the sand hills. Cattle farming is the primary business, and these sandy prairies are ideal not only for raising cattle, but also for building beautiful golf courses. The course we were building was situated on the edge of a massive ravine. Exposed white sand stone and mature pines lined the walls of the cliff, while a small trout filled creek meandered through the ravine floor.

While there I was able to take a road trip to South Dakota. On this trip I visited the Badlands, Mount Rushmore and Black Hills National Forest. Each of these three spots were very unique. The Badlands featured colored rock and sediment formations that stretched for miles. Although similar to the Painted Desert in Arizona, the Badlands were much bolder, both in size and color.

From there I proceeded to Mount Rushmore. This was a very impressive monument. The creativity and execution of those ideas by Gutzon Borglum are truly amazing to behold! The town of Keystone, South Dakota is at the base of the mountain. This small, wild-west-like town was an enjoyable spot to relax for a short while before hitting the road again. Instead of returning the same way I came, I decided to take the longer, more scenic route, through the Black Hills National Forest. I was glad I did, as I was able to see wildlife up close and spend some time climbing bluffs which overlooked Mount Rushmore and the surrounding area.

Nebraska was far more beautiful than I ever expected it to be. The rolling sand hills, big sky and fresh air makes one realize there is more to this state than just corn. I flew in and out of Denver, so in all, I was able to see Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado. Each state had its own character and possessed great beauty. This trip was special as it gave me the opportunity to see a variety of natural landscapes designed by the hand of God, yet at the same time the abilities of man, as given them by their Creator, in ways such as Mount Rushmore and the golf course we were building!

Heads Carolina, tails...Atlantic City?!

While Rachel and I were still dating we found ourselves very bored one evening, and neither of us knew what we wanted to do. So instead of figuring it out we decided to jump in the car, and started flipping a quarter as we went. If it came up heads, we were turn left, if it landed on tails, we would turn right, and so on... An hour or two later we found ourselves in a Civil War period restaurant and pub in Gettysburg. If you know me, you know I LOVE hamburgers. It just so happens that the burger I had that night was quite possibly the best burger I ever had! It was a fun, spontaneous evening! Well, two weekends ago we were in the midst of a slow Saturday (not normal for us at all!), and decided it was time to hop in the car and flip a coin again! After a series of flips, a few extra miles on the car, and nearly 2 hours later, we found ourselves in Atlantic City, NJ! Wow, quite the quarter! We didn't stay very long, only and hour or two, but we enjoying seeing the ocean and walking the board walk. Rachel even found a new pair of shoes. After eating some pizza, we headed home. It was another spontaneous and enjoyable trip. So the next time you aren't sure what to do for the day, I suggest getting out a shiny quarter and see where it takes you!

Our 2nd Anniversary!

Last week was our 2nd Anniversary. The past two years have gone by quickly, as we have seen and done a lot during this time! Rachel is a wonderful wife, and I consider myself very blessed to have her in my life. To celebrate, we visited Longwood Gardens Saturday, and then went to a new restaurant (new to us at least!). It was a fun day, and the fantastic weather just made it all the nicer! Here are a few pictures of the gardens.

Weekend trippers

This past weekend Rachel and I enjoyed the company of Chase, Bekah and Caie Buffington. We started at the Reading Terminal Market. There was so much great food to select from, but we all settled for Cheese steaks! We also purchased some fruits and vegetables from a vendor. I bought some blood oranges, and they are out of this world, not to mention very unique in color. After the market we drove up Ben Franklin Parkway onto Kelly Drive which runs along the Schuylkill River. We took our time walking along the waterfront and enjoyed watching rowing teams compete in what appeared to be a very large event. From here we weaved our back home and enjoyed another evening of playing games.

Sunday we all went to Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, the church Rachel and I have been attending, and then spent the afternoon relaxing. We have been here about 3 months now, and are still as thrilled about it as the day we moved in. Here is a view from our balcony. We are really excited to be here. We love the Plymouth Meeting area as it is centrally located to many things. Rachel's workplace is only 1 mile away. The Turnpike is just as close for when we go home to Harrisburg or for my work travels. We have a mall, restaurants and grocery stores within a few minutes drive; our church is only 10-15 minutes away as well. We are grateful for where the Lord has placed us. As happy as we were to have Liz, Jeff and the kids come to visit, they were not our first visitors! Rich and Daphyn visited us a few weeks ago. Now that I have regained my memory, I fondly recall what a fun time we had. Rachel and Daphyn went shopping at King of Prussia, while Rich and I took the opportunity to visit a local winery. As thrilling as the shopping probably was, it was really interesting to see, and taste, the wine making process. The four of us then met up for dinner. I am very sorry and ashamed of myself for forgetting. Please forgive me Haucks! Liz, Jeff, Joost and Grace came for a visit. We were really excited to have them, and it proved to be a very enjoyable visit. After visiting with Rachel and I, the vanBastelaars headed to Bucks County to visit with Jeff's family. It is such a joy to not only be closer to family now, but to be able to have them come and visit. Our place in Phoenix was very small, and that made it very hard to entertian friends. The Lord has blessed Rachel and I with a large (at least for us!) apartment, and this will make it much easier to host people.

Along with getting adjusted to a new location and new jobs, we are also looking for a new church. We have visited a couple, and are trying to narrow our search to the right one. We thank the Lord that He is in control and already has the right church waiting for us. What we miss most about Arizona, other than the fantastic weather, is our church and the many good friends we had. We anxiously anticipate making new friends and thus being able to have them over to visit. With the weather warming, the flowers blooming and spring in the air, Rachel and I are excited about the many new opportunities that await us!

After much deliberation...

...and extreme taunting and pressure from those close to me, I have decided to return to the exciting world of blogging! It has been a while, over four and a half months to be exact, so my writing and typing skills are a bit rusty I am sure.

It will take some time to get you caught up on mine and Rachel's exciting lives, but I've got time! You see, I've started my own business, and for some reason the phone isn't ringing off the hook, yet, so this gives me a little extra time to do things like this.

The last I wrote the Christmas season was upon us, and Rachel and I were hitting the road, with all our belongings, as we moved back to the great state of Pennsylvania. We had planned to make it a longer trip, taking time to see the sights, etc., but the weather from New Mexico all the way to Pennsylvania was pretty bad. So instead of taking our time we decided to just get home as soon as possible. It was an enjoyable trip though. Very rarely do you get to spend a few days with your wife making a cross country trip. Thankfully we made it home safely in time for an ice storm. No more warm Arizona!

Next time I will tell you about our search for a place to live, Rachel's new job, my new business and everything else in between. As for now, I am off to visit Merion Golf Club!

Christmas season

This year I seem to be anticipating the Christmas season more than usual. Two years ago I was on my way for an interview in Phoenix the morning after Christmas. Last year was special because it was Rachel and my first Christmas together, but it was hard being away from everyone. So this year I am really excited to be celebrating Christmas with family. Although Rachel and I are not looking forward to the colder weather of the east coast, we are looking forward to celebrating in temperatures below 90 degrees!

We were watching a Christmas special on television the other night, and someone sang Silent Night. I've heard this song 1,000 times, but there was one line in particular that stuck out to me like never before. It says, in reference to Christ's birth, "With the dawn of redeeming grace". What a powerful and exciting thought! Jesus has brought grace (undeserved favor or merit, the free gift of salvation) to all who will, by faith, believe in Him. I pray that everyone reading this believes in Jesus. If not, come to Him! In the Bible a jailer asked his prisoners, Paul and Silas, "'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?', So they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.'" (Acts 16:30,31). It's that easy! And for those who do know Him, I encourage you to focus on that gift of grace this Christmas season.

       Silent Night

             Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

             Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born.

             Silent night, holy night!
Son of God love's pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth.
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth.

We're movin' on up!

Well, it is official now. Rachel's last day of work is Monday, December 3rd. She will start packing our belongings Tuesday. My last day working in Phoenix will be the 7th. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we are excited to be moving. Fortunately I have made roughly 13 or 14 moves over the past 8 years, so I am getting pretty good at moving. Though this will be the biggest yet!

My boss has agreed to let me continue working remotely for the next 2 months while I get the business up and running, which is a huge blessing. We knew our time in Arizona wouldn't last forever, and for the past few months we have felt that our days here were numbered. We determined that this was the right time to move, and are planning to hit the road December 13th. We will be home in time for Christmas, but intend to take our time driving cross-country to see some new sites and enjoy the beauty of our great country. We have so much to do to get the business up and running, but I am very excited to say the least! Rachel completed and passed her CPA exam at the end of August. She worked very hard, and I am proud of her for doing so well. To celebrate we decided to go to Los Angeles for a long weekend. This was the first time that either of us were there. It was a great weekend as we were able to see the Pacific Ocean, visit the Getty Museum, attend a church service at John MacArthur's church, see the Santa Monica Pier, go to an Angels baseball game, and we even met Jay Leno.

Two weeks later we went home to spend a few days at Rehobeth Beach, DE with my family. After that we headed back to Harrisburg to spend some time with Rachel's family. During that time there was a baby shower for Bekah Buffington (which your's truly unfortunately managed to spoil the surprise). It was also my birthday while I was home, and Rachel surprised me with a birthday celebration. It was so nice to see our families.

Upon returning from our trip I had a small surgery, and then another, which I am in the process of, but nearly recovered from. It has been a challenge, but God shows His faithfulness in every area of our lives. Mom and Dad Bosworth came first, and then two weeks later Mom and Dad Schuck and Anna. Remember how small I told you our apartment is? Well it got even smaller during those weeks, but what a great time we had with our parents! As much as Rachel and I have enjoyed this past year and a half living out west, we still get homesick for everyone, so it was such a treat to have everyone come visit us! We started out with Mom and Dad Bosworth exploring the Arizona landmarks. What a beautiful state Arizona is! Driving north out of Phoenix travellers climb over 5,000 feet in elevation in about an hour's time. The landscape changes before your eyes; from the HOT dry Valley of the Sun where cacti and scorpions dwell, to the transition zones, all the way up to the uplands of Sedona then higher yet into Flagstaff where Humphrey's Peak rises to nearly 13,000 feet. In just a short amount of time we saw a lot of beautiful scenery, once again giving glory to its Creator. We made our way to Sedona, Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert early in our trip. Of course we couldn't come this far and not stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona! So we trekked our way all the way there just to be chased off the corner by some local yokel! But before being chased away, Dad and I stood on that famous corner, though infamous may now be the better word! We went on to see the Grand Canyon as well before my parents headed home. This was truly the site to see. You feel so small standing along the edge! This was also a stop when the Schucks were here. It was fun to see everyone's reaction to seeing the Canyon. Anna really wanted to see Hoover Dam, so the next day we drove to Nevada and explored this man-made wonder. Though it did not compare to the Grand Canyon, the Dam was such an amazing site. The scale of things out here is what gets me. Everything is so big! The mountains, the sky, even the architecture. From Nevada we headed south through parts of California and on to Lake Havasu, Arizona. If there is any place hotter than Phoenix, it is here! Wow! You might actually melt if you stood out too for too long! Rachel, Anna and I rented a jet ski and buzzed around this huge man-made lake. We were able to go from Arizona to California as it is right on the border. We had a great time, but all three of us could barely walk the next day after bouncing around on the waves so much. The London Bridge is also in Lake Havasu. It was brought over piece by piece and put back together, and is used as a functioning bridge for automobiles. After our road trip with the Schucks we made our way back to Phoenix. We had a great time with our families while they were here.

Short on space, but full of love

Upon getting married Rachel and I moved into our first apartment. Although it is not very big it has been a great place to start out. For being the type that likes my own space the Lord quickly did a work on me! We started out very humbly with just our bed and two lawn chairs. We really didn't know how long we would be in this apartment or what we would be doing beyond that, so we lived very simply at first. Some may laugh when they hear us talk about our lawn chairs, but we learned to be grateful in all our circumstances, just like Paul wrote in Philipians 4:11-13. We waited to see where the Lord would lead us, and during this time I lost my job and went through some health issues, yet God remained faithful as always. Slowly by slowly we started to get some furniture. It started one day when I saw a book shelf that someone was throwing away. After investigating I found it to be in great conditions, so I dragged it up three flights of stairs to our apartment and suddenly, even with that one piece, our little humble apartment began to look like a home. This was followed by a co-worker of Rachel's lending us some of her extra furniture as she had no where to keep it. And the most recent blessing came when Pulte, the company that Rachel works for, decided to sell the furniture from their model homes. This allowed us to get some really nice furniture for a great price. It would have been easy to have just gone out and bought a bunch of furniture right away, but the Lord always provides. Never forget that. We were even blessed to receive a small Christmas tree in the mail from Elizabeth. It just seemed to fit our place perfectly that first Christmas Rachel and I had together. It was a while before we had any guests over to visit, simply because the size of the apartment makes it hard to entertain, and there aren't enough closests and corners to hide all our boxes, but our good friends David and Ishani Cannon looked beyond our clutter and were great company as our first guests. So even though we were far removed from our favorite teams on the East Coast, we still couldn't do without our football. The Arizona Cardinals were just putting on the finishing touches to their new stadium when we moved to Phoenix. When the schedule was released it just so happened that the inaugural football game would be against none other than Rachel's favorite team, not to mention Super Bowl Champion, Pittsburgh Steelers. I quickly called the box office to make sure we had tickets to the game. Before I knew it they had talked me into buying season tickets! Nevertheless, I was guaranteed of having seats for the Steelers game, and I knew Rachel would be thrilled! Although it was only a preseason game, it was a lot of fun to see Rachel's favorite team. Other than a few bright spots here and there, and a pretty wild Monday night game against the Chicago Bears, the Cardinals played like, well, the Cardinals! The new stadium was a modern architectural wonder, but it is no Beaver Stadium! And hey, maybe this will be the Cards' year...

San Diego

After getting settled in to Arizona we figured it was time to start taking some trips to explore other parts of the west coast. So in September of 2006 we took an extended weekend trip to San Diego. This was such a beautiful city; the weather was perfect! Our first stop was to the San Diego Zoo. I'm not much of a zoo person, but this was a really fun place. We saw so many neat animals, all of which gave proof of a most creative and awesome Creator! Even after spending nearly an entire day there, we probably could have come back the next day there was so much to see and do. That evening we drove around downtown San Diego, high lighted by the historic Gaslamp District. This was a bustling area with great shoppes, restuarants and bars, but not much parking to be found! The following day we got up early and made our way to Torre Pines Golf Club, which will be hosting the 2008 U.S. Open. As most of you know, one of my great passions in life is golf course architecture. I love to visit old courses to see what qualities have endured over time. The Club was gracious enough to lend Rachel and I a golf cart and let us wonder about snapping some pictures. Although I prefer to walk when playing a round of golf, it was enjoyable to be with my wife buzzing around a famous course like this one. When we were finished looking around I was a little disappointed with the course, I was expecting more, but the property itself was fantastic as it flirted with the edge of large cliffs that dove straight into the Pacific Ocean some 200 feet below! Our next stop was a San Diego Padres game. After catching a quick lunch and finding some cheap tickets we made our way into Petco Park. I have visited a number of ballparks, but this may be the best I have seen yet. Rachel even remarked how what a great place it was to watch a baseball game. There were fantastic views to the downtown and really not a bad seat in the house, as any good fan does, they buy the cheap tickets and move toward better seats as the game progresses! And to the joy of the crowd, the home team pulled off a late game victory. Of all the fun things we had already done, there was one thing, however, that we had yet to do...touch the Pacific Ocean! After resting for a while we jumped in the car and drove over to Coronado, a small resort island right off the shore from San Diego. We headed straight for the beach and got our first taste of the Pacific. The water was cold, so that didn't last long, but we just hung out on the beach and relaxed for a while. By this point in the day we were extremely hungry, fortunately there are some great seafood places! Our last day in San Diego was spent relaxing and seeing a few more sites before driving back to Phoenix. It was a great weekend.

Honeymooning

Our chronicles begin in Jamaica, where Rachel and I went on our honeymoon. After a bumpy two hour ride from the airport in a small van we arrived at the resort and were taken to our room, only to find that the air conditioning wasn't working properly. We were instantly upgraded to one of their finest suites! It was fantastic! There were a lot of fun things to do while we were there, which we took advantage of, but for the most part, we just enjoyed laying by the pool and catching some rays. It was an all-inclusive resort, so we ate a lot of the good food and drank some fun drinks as well! I seemed to get to know a few of the workers pretty well. Every evening we would dress up and eat at one of there fantastic restuarants. As good as their main courses were, my favorite was the creme brulee, which I ordered almost every night. As the sun set each evening we were left with some fantastic images! Among the fun things we did were a glass bottom boat trip, kayaking, getting messages and we were even able to squeeze in a trip to the Taj Mahal! Like all good things our honeymoon had to come to an end, but it was such a special time and a great start to the rest of our lives together.

Leading off...

I am starting this blog in the hopes of keeping you, my friends and family, feeling a little closer to Rachel and I while we are here in Arizona.
